Tom Holland might have swung into our lives as Spider-Man, but if his recent comments are anything to go by, he’s definitely got his sights set on another British icon: James Bond.

Appearing on Gordon Ramsay’s Scrambled YouTube show, the 28-year-old actor was asked point-blank about the Bond rumors. With a grin, Holland responded, “We’ll get there one day,” before calling it “the pinnacle of roles for any young British actor.” He made sure to keep it humble too, adding, “I already consider myself to be the luckiest kid alive.”

It’s not the first time Holland has spoken about his Bond dreams. Back in 2021, he revealed to Total Film that he once pitched a young James Bond origin story to Sony. “It didn’t really make sense,” he admitted. “It was the dream of a young kid, and I don’t think the Bond estate were particularly interested.” While that pitch never made it past the development stage, it led directly to Uncharted, which turned out to be a solid action flick and another win in his growing list of major lead roles.

There’s something refreshing about Holland’s openness. Most actors dodge the Bond speculation like it’s a trap. Taron Egerton has already ruled himself out, saying he’s “not the right guy,” and Henry Golding once called the role “every actor’s nightmare,” citing the intense pressure that comes with becoming 007. Holland, on the other hand, is leaning in. Not with arrogance, but with a clear respect for the franchise’s legacy.

And what a legacy it is. The Bond role has been held by some of the most iconic names in cinema history. Daniel Craig’s gritty, emotional Bond redefined the franchise and added layers of vulnerability to a character that was once all martinis and one-liners. Before him, Pierce Brosnan brought suave sophistication to the role, and Sean Connery practically wrote the book on cinematic cool. Even Timothy Dalton, whose darker take wasn’t fully appreciated at the time, has gained newfound respect for his closer-to-the-books portrayal.

That kind of weight isn’t lost on Holland. When he talks about Bond, it’s clear he understands the responsibility. He’s not just looking to check a box or add another franchise to his resume — he wants to earn it.

And maybe, just maybe, the timing is right. Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have made it clear they’re looking for someone who can commit to a decade or more. They’ve also hinted that the next Bond might be a bit younger. Holland fits that bill, and with Amazon MGM now overseeing development of the next chapter, the creative door is wide open.

In June, Amazon MGM Studios announced that Dune director Denis Villeneuve will helm the project, the studio’s first Bond outing — with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight writing the script. Villeneuve will also executive produce alongside Tanya Lapointe, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman joining the producing team. With a lineup like this, the next era of 007 is shaping up to be anything but ordinary.

Still, the shortlist remains crowded. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Regé-Jean Page, James Norton, Richard Madden — all viable contenders, all frequently name-dropped. But none of them has Spider-Man’s global reach, or Holland’s mix of box office draw and grounded charisma.

“We’ll Get There One Day”

Whether or not he ends up as 007, it’s safe to say Tom Holland’s name will keep coming up. And if nothing else, his honest enthusiasm has reminded fans that James Bond still holds a special place in British pop culture. It’s not just a part — it’s a dream. And Tom Holland is one of the few actors unafraid to say it out loud.

Sometimes, that confidence is what sets you apart.
